Family Search and Related Websites

https://www.familysearch.org – This genealogy website contains one family tree for everyone, at least that’s the goal.  It’s run and managed by the LDS church.  It is 100% free to use.  However, there are both pros and cons to this site.  See below for the pros and cons.

The following websites are related to familysearch.org and they  give you another view of your family tree. Use your credentials from familysearch.org to login.

https://www.relativefinder.org/ - Among other things, this website (a) displays relationships between two people on your family tree that are not immediately related and (b) displays relationships between you and all kinds of famous people.

https://virtual-pedigree.fhtl.byu.edu/ - Virtual Pedigree

Pros and Cons of Family Search Website

Generally I think this website contains some of the most complete and accurate genealogy information.  And you get to see all the documents without paying a fee.  However, it can be very frustrating at times.

You will find that many of your relatives already exist on this website.  And you might spend a lot of time adding information you worked hard to verify.  Often times professional genealogists have added information to this website  But, then one day you go look and find that someone came along and changed it all and destroy all the good information!

Usually people mess up this website when they change the information on this website just to make it match the information they found on similar family trees on ancestry.com or heritage.com.  Not that those websites are bad or should be used – they contain a lot of good information.  But just because information and family connections exist on ANY of the genealogy websites doesn’t make it correct!  People often copy inaccurate information hundreds of times on genealogy websites! Then, they go to familysearch.org and start making changes and all your hard work is gone!  Many times they make changes without checking to see what already exists, but most FREQUENTLY they make changes without checking their sources.  People need to understand that just become it exists on ancestry.com, myheritage.com, or any other genealogy website doesn't make it correct!

However, even with all these frustrations, there is a lot of value in this website, especially when you use it in conjunction with their other genealogy websites.
